To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, in 1998, the Portuguese Parliament passed a resolution establishing December 10 as National Human Rights Day. It was determined that, starting the following year, the Human Rights Prize would be awarded annually to a non-governmental organization or personality that had distinguished itself in the defense of human rights.
The 2020 edition also awarded Gold Medals Commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to:
- Elvira Fortunato, CENIMAT|i3N - FCT NOVA - "scientist, for the excellence of her scientific and research work, pioneer in important fields of knowledge, namely the relevant contribution of her research area, and participation, in a project led by women in the development of an ecological biosensor that, with a reduced environmental impact, will allow the rapid detection of the presence of coronavirus in wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) - the project "Eco2Covid - Development of platforms for Coronavirus detection and monitoring in water" - using low-cost technology, already developed for other functions ";
- Maria do Rosário Martins, IHMT- NOVA - "for her coordination work in the first comparative study in Portugal on the consequences of Covid-19 in immigrant families and of Portuguese nationality in the municipality of Amadora";
