Elvira Fortunato, 56-year-old scientist, sees her work distinguished with the Pessoa 2020 Award, which this year reaches its 34th edition.

The scientist, professor and researcher at NOVA School of Science and Technology | FCT NOVA has been regularly awarded both nationally and internationally.  Recently she was awarded the European Prize "Horizon Impact Award 2020", for her work in the area of sustainable materials. From the list of awards, two "ERC Advanced Grant" grants stand out, being awarded in 2008 the first prize in the area of Engineering with the project Advanced Amorphous Multicomponent Oxides for Transparent Electronics | INVISIBLE in the amount of 2.25 M€. The second Advanced Grant, awarded in 2018, worth 3.5 M€ becomes the largest grant ever awarded to a Portuguese researcher and the largest ever awarded by the ERC in this call to which more than 2160 researchers applied worldwide.

Elvira Fortunato graduated in Materials Engineering at the Faculty of Science and Technology, University NOVA of Lisbon (FCT NOVA), having obtained her PhD in 1995 in the area of Microelectronics and Optoelectronics. She is currently full professor and researcher at NOVA School of Science and Technology | FCT NOVA, Director of the Associate Laboratory i3N, Institute of Nanostructures, Nanomodelling and Nanofabrication. Since 2017 she is Vice-Rector of NOVA University of Lisbon.

The award is a joint initiative of Expresso and Caixa Geral de Depósitos that distinguishes the personality of Arts, Science or Culture that, each year, stands out for his work.
